EXPERIENCE

Special Education Advocate in Private Practice (2013- present)

Karla Maldonado is fluent in both spoken and written Spanish and English. She is a uniquely qualified consultant and advocate because of her experience working with
families facing a wide range of challenges. She understands the day to day struggles of trying to care for a child who has a handicapping condition while trying to deal with ob-taining services from government agencies for that child. She also understands the
impact that an inappropriate school program has on the child and his/her family and how it can hurt the student and waste their time.

She has first-hand experience in dealing with the Special Education process as she is the parent of two children who require special education services. Because of their struggles, she decided to help other parents and caregivers through the complex world of understanding and obtaining special needs services. In the course of her career, Karla has sought and obtained specialized training in many areas related to her client’s Special Education diagnoses including:  Social Emotional Learning, Social Thinking, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyslexia, Early Intervention and ADHD.  Karla was accepted into the program for and has obtained training in Special Education Advocacy through the year-long class taught by the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates.  She has
experience in advocating during IEP and 504 Plan meetings; consulting with parents, school district staff and professionals in the community regarding students’ special needs; the organization and maintenance of Special Education files for optimum record keeping; and the preparation and strategizing for cases that may need to move into Due Process.
